Child and adolescent psychotherapy

Child and adolescent psychotherapy

Is about understanding the complex emotional lives of children, young people and families. It is based on the psychoanalytic approach, which seeks to look below the surface of human relationships. Child and adolescent psychotherapists assess and treat infants, children and young people and work with their parents, families and the networks surrounding them. Therapists are trained to carefully observe a child or young person and respond to what they might be communicating through their behaviour and play. Child and adolescent psychotherapists may see children and young people individually or with other family members. They also apply their framework of thinking to work with parents, families and carers and to training and supporting other professionals who work with children, young people and families to encourage a deeper understanding of the child's perspective.
